#ChartoftheDay: In 2020, Complaints on Liberty of Persons was 91% Unlawful Arrests and Detention

The right of freedom/liberty of persons is a central human right related to the critical aspect of a person’s freedom. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) received 45,280 complaints relating to freedom/liberty of persons, and complaints about unlawful arrests and detention were the highest received in that category, with 41,040 making up 90.6% of the total received.

Complaints on rights to freedom of peaceful assembly made up 7% of the total complaints received in that category.

According to the OHCHR, the right to personal liberty demands that people not be arrested or detained unless required by law, and the arrest or detention is not arbitrary. As a result, this right is supposed to shield individuals from the excesses of the government and its agents as it applies to all forms of detention in which people are deprived of their liberty.
