Despite having spent N15.68 million naira on the project, the one-year-old Government Day Science Secondary School (GDSSS) Dutse Administrative Block Project has a leaking roof.

After the school was converted to a science school in 2019, administrative activities Dutse were improved. The Jigawa State government decided to build an administrative block for the Government Day Secondary School (GDSSS) to house the office of the school’s administrative staff and give the school a new look befitting of a science school.

The administrative building, which was listed in the Jigawa Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MOST) capital projects, was contracted to MS Danzomo Nig. Ltd. on November 2, 2020, for N15.68 million. According to Awal Ismaila, Vice Principal of the School, the contract, which was supposed to last 5 months, was completed on time and handed over to the school in 2021.

Despite the fact that the contract was executed and delivered within the specified time frame, there are concerns about the quality of work completed.

The building’s roofing appears to be in poor condition. The new facility’s roof was already dented and a closer inspection revealed that low-quality materials were used in the construction. Furthermore, the finishing of the roofing was subpar.

Inside the building, the state and quality of the roof was more glaring. The ceiling boards were already wet, indicating that the roof was leaking.

There are serious concerns that the roof will not withstand a strong wind. The Vice Principal of the school confirmed to the Dataphyte project tracking team that the contractor has already been called in twice to work on the leaking roof less than a year after it was built.

Without a doubt, the construction of the administrative building provided the school with a much-needed facility. However, the building’s durability is in doubt. The project may not be good value for the money spent due to the low quality of the materials used.

A search on the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) website for more information on the contractor, MS Danzomo Nig Ltd revealed that the company is not registered with the CAC.

Similarly, a search for the contractor’s details on the list of registered contractors and companies revealed that the company is not on the list of registered contractors and companies on the Due Process portal.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) in November 2021 had expressed displeasure with abandoned and substandard constituency projects in some parts of Kano and Jigawa axis.

Dataphyte’s tracking of the Government Day Science Secondary School Dutse Administrative block show that the use of substandard materials for project construction also happens in the state’s own budgeted and contracted projects.
