Dataphyte shines at 2020 PWC Media Excellence Award as reporter carts away prize.

A Dataphyte journalist, Aderemi Ojekunle snagged first-runner up prize at the 2020 PwC Media Excellence Award in Capital Markets reporting.

In its fifth edition, the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Media Excellence Awards celebrates and rewards excellence in business reporting in Nigeria. However, owing to COVID-19 preventive measures, the 2020 PwC Media Excellence Award scheduled for Friday, October 16, ran virtually.

Aderemi’s story, ‘₦350 Billion Sukuk Issuances and the Missing Transparency on Nigeria’s Borrowing,’ was adjudged one of the best entries at this year’s business reporting award.

The story highlighted the advantages of Islamic financing for human capital and infrastructural development and red flags in Nigeria’s Sukuk programme.

Startup’s recognition, Nigeria’s win

“We will continue to do our best to ensure that Nigeria is at the limelight of data reporting…”

This award comes less than a year after Dataphyte set up shop in Nigeria. The data-driven outfit, which promises to promote data journalism teaching journalists and newsrooms alike, makes good on this milestone.

Already, the data development platform collates and curates data from diverse sources. And further transforms the data into machine-readable formats for interpretation. Within its offerings include interactive visualizations, data-driven insights, and analysis to fill the gaps.

Mr Joshua Olufemi, Dataphyte’s founder, says the recognition is a big win for data journalism in Nigeria.

“We will continue to do our best to ensure that Nigeria is at the limelight of data reporting. And to use data to hold the government accountable.”Mr Joshua Olufemi, Dataphyte Founder and CEO

At the awards ceremony, TheCable’s Taiwo Adebulu won the Capital Markets reporting category. Likewise, reporters from BusinessDay and The PUNCH clinched the SME, Tax, and Business reporting categories.

Meanwhile, Aderemi’s series of revealing COVID-19 corruption in Nigeria earned him a place as a speaker at the 2020 African Investigative Journalism Conference in South Africa. The conference which ran last week took place online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
