23.1% was Nigerian’s unemployment rate prior to the pandemic and EndSARS. Now with over a trillion in damages, and an uncertain 2021, we question how we got here. And according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), this could have been avoided. In ACLED’s civil unrest projections, it identified 37 countries including Nigeria that would face major challenges post pandemic.
5 billion naira is inadequate to bailout the Aviation industry. At a public hearing on six executive bills on fine-tuning regulatory issues and effective management of agencies, the senate committee noting the effects of the pandemic said the figure was insufficient. According to the Minister of Aviation, ₦4 billion was for airline operators and ₦1 billion for other business owners. But Smart Adeyemi, the Committee’s Chairman maintained that the fund was meagre to finance aircraft maintenance and keep their workers.
18 dead and 23 injured in prison break attempt, reports show. The escape attempt, however, was met with punitive action from the management of Okere Correctional Centre, Warri, Delta State. And according to a source from Sahara Reporters, the food rationing may lead to another jailbreak. Already there have been reports of foiled escape attempts and successful prison breaks following the EndSARS demonstrations. But whether the Delta escape emanated from similar reasons remains unknown.
9th of November marks the resumption of the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE). Prior to this, the pandemic led to the shutdown of many activities, education, and examinations inclusive. But then things reopened, albeit gradually. Subsequently, security challenges occasioned by the ENDSARS protests led to the council postponing the examinations indefinitely on Monday, October 25. But in a statement from the council signed by the Head Information and Public Relations Division, NECO, Mr Azeez Sani, the exams will run from Monday 9th November 2020 to Saturday 28th November 2020.
